The Crowder family: more than 20 years of giving back
Lisa Crowder Jackson was only 44 years old when she lost her battle with leukemia. A mother of two, Lisa loved animals, the beach, and being together with family.
“In fact, if it was breathing – cats, dogs, any animal, and people – she loved them,” said Kristy Crowder, Lisa’s niece. “And she had a great sense of humor. Everyone said she was such an absolute joy to be around.”
Her spirit continues
Even today, 23 years later, her giving spirit continues to live on thanks to her father, Jimmie Crowder, who started the Kingfish Shootout fundraising event in her memory in 2003. Through this fishing tournament the Crowder family and C-Quarters Marina in Carrabelle, Florida have raised nearly $1.6M for the Leukemia Research Foundation. Those incredible funds have provided support for patient education and scientific advancements in leukemia research.

The family is committed too. Even the Covid-19 pandemic did not break their fundraising stride. When the country was locked down and the event had to be cancelled, the Crowder family and friends still raised funds, continuing the tradition of raffling off a large smoker.
“Ronald Hayes, who was a close friend of my grandfather’s, and whose son also had leukemia as a young child, donated the smoker, which he has done annually, and we are eternally grateful,” said Kristy, who also serves as tournament director.
Friends, new participants and sponsors look forward to this big event each year.
“Rob Grabemann, Leukemia Research Foundation board member, has been with us almost every one of the more than 20 years the event has been held,” said Lindsey Page, Lisa’s daughter. “He is a wonderful man and very enthusiastic about the Leukemia Research Foundation and what it stands for.”
A dedicated team
Today the Kingfish Shootout continues to be a Crowder family affair, with Kristy at the helm. “I have a great team. And Tyler, my husband — Lisa’s nephew — is my number one supporter. He is there to do anything and everything. In fact, everyone – friends and family — pitch in. And our boys, Jace (10) and Reid (7) know as much about the tournament and the Foundation as we do, and that’s pretty special.”
Through the dedication of the Crowder family, and that of the team and many other contributors, this year they had a record 88 boats competing with up to 6 anglers on each boat. In total, the event raised more than $146,300 once final tallies were in.

“This is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever done,” said Kristy. “I love seeing it all come together and everyone excited to give back! I truly look forward to this event, and already can’t wait till next year!”
