Champions for a Cure: The Mix Family

Larry and Patty Mix know all too well the impact of leukemia. After losing their young son Joey to the disease in 1996, they transformed their grief into action, creating the Joey’s Angels Chapter of the Leukemia Research Foundation. Since then, they have tirelessly raised over $3 million for the Foundation to advance leukemia research and provide support to other affected families.

“When we lost Joey, we wanted to do something so other families wouldn’t have to go through what we went through,” said Patty. “We raise money for the Foundation in honor of Joey, and also for future generations. We know the money we raise has a direct impact on research into the causes and cures of leukemia.”

Their dedication is truly a family affair. Their daughter, Alyssa (right), has also taken up the cause, actively serving on the Leukemia Research Foundation’s Affiliate Board. Their son, Drew (left), is a strong participant in other fundraising efforts, as well. Together they are helping to continue their family’s legacy of supporting innovative research and helping patients and families.

Strong advocates

“When Joey was sick, getting information about the disease and what to do was confusing. Today, through our donations and fundraising, we are proud to also support the patient education programs that the Leukemia Research Foundation hosts,” said Larry. “We never found anything like that when Joey was going through treatment.”

“We are also advocates for the Foundation’s patient need-based financial assistance program, which directly helps those affected by leukemia,” said Patty. “This program is very important because for some, this diagnosis can be financially devastating. The patient grants can help lessen the pressure, so they can better focus on their health and treatment.”

Both Patty and Larry know the value of fundraising. They are current Leukemia Research Foundation governing board members. Larry is also a past president of that board, and the long-time president of Joey’s Angels. In addition to being a Leukemia Research Foundation board member, Patty is also vice president of Joey’s Angels. Both have been active fundraisers and donors for more than 25 years.

A legacy making a difference

The Mix family is deeply committed to ensuring Joey’s legacy makes a lasting difference. Their vision and hard work are helping to pave the way for breakthroughs that will change lives, bringing the Leukemia Research Foundation closer to a cure.
