Chris Fleming: AML survivor
Chris is a survivor of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and shares his story below in his own words.
“Hi my name is Chris Fleming. I wanted to share with you that I am a survivor of an aggressive form of an AML leukemia.

I had basically been given only two weeks before it was going to be at 100%. So, I entered into an aggressive form of chemotherapy treatment over five weeks. And three more infused treatments of cytarabine to eliminate not only the spread of leukemia, but hopefully beat it. And I am happy to say that I did beat it.
Peer support and educational resources
But one of the things when going through this, it can be very emotional and can affect you physically, as it did me. So, what I did is, I turned to the Leukemia Research Foundation for assistance to help me get through this. They had a referral program where I was able to speak to someone else who had leukemia and went through the same type of treatment I did, and how they are recovering.
They also had some educational webinars. One of them that I took advantage of focused not only on helping to better understand the side-effects, but in addition, looked at certain therapies, treatments and cures, as well as diet programs to help you get through it. And that is one thing I took advantage of, and I am very grateful for that.

So, I want to tell you that it is very important that we support an organization – a foundation – like this because we need to continue to have not only the resources, for someone like myself, but also a place where people can be educated and have a greater understanding of what they are dealing with… like the inflammation we get from the chemotherapy. It is also helpful to understand the type of therapies, cures, that are out there, as well as the types of diet and health routines we need to go on, so that we can thrive and become a lot healthier once we have gone through this.
So, I want to thank the Leukemia Research Foundation for being there for me, and also offering me these types of programs that I did take advantage of, and it has been helping me get through this.”
