Legacy Giving

Why Are Legacy Gifts So Important?

Among the researchers, patients, and families we support, the fight to cure leukemia continues. Dedicated donors like you are vital to sustaining our mission. By including the Leukemia Research Foundation in your long-term financial planning, you can help create a better future for every researcher, patient, and family we serve.

Types of Legacy Gifts

There are many ways that you can fuel our mission while achieving your financial and estate planning goals.

Bequest in your Will or Trust

Bequest in your Will or Trust

A common, easy way to plan your impact on the future of research and patient support.

How It Works

  1. Include language in your will or trust that gives a specific dollar amount, percentage of funds, assets, or residual of your estate to the Leukemia Research Foundation.

Sample language

I give and bequeath [insert amount, percentage, or description of assets/residual] to the Leukemia Research Foundation, a non-profit organization located at 191 Waukegan Road, Suite 105, Northfield, IL 60093, EIN 36-6102182, for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

Key Benefits

  • One of the simplest and most popular ways to make a planned gift
  • Eligible for estate tax savings
  • Retain control of your assets during your lifetime and leave a legacy without affecting your current finances

There are different types of bequests – talk with your financial advisor to decide what type works best for you.

Retirement, Life Insurance, or Bank Account Beneficiary

Retirement, Life Insurance, or Bank Account Beneficiary

Make a meaningful gift to research, patients, and families through your 401k, IRA, or another policy you no longer need

How It Works

  1. Name the Leukemia Research Foundation as a primary, secondary, or contingent beneficiary on your retirement account, life insurance policy, or bank account
  2. Contact the Foundation to let us know you have made us a beneficiary

Related Options

  • Are you at least 70.5 years of age? – Talk to your financial advisor about qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from your IRA, which can also reduce your taxable income
  • Have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)? – Set up an annual gift and appreciate your impact on the mission today

Key Benefits

  • Quick and easy: No attorney necessary – update beneficiaries as you wish
  • Designate before it’s too late: Helps avoid the common trap of overlooking beneficiary selections for important policies

Peace of mind: Knowledge that your gift will support the researchers, patients, and families who need it most

Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)

Charitable Lead Trust (CLT)

Support the pursuit of a cure for leukemia today and pass your remaining assets to family and loved ones for their future

How It Works

  1. You transfer assets (such as cash, securities, or property) into a trust.
  2. The trust makes annual payments to a nonprofit like the Leukemia Research Foundation for a specific term (e.g. 20 years) or your lifetime.
  3. When that term ends, the remaining assets are passed to your designated beneficiaries (usually family members or heirs).

Key Benefits

  • Immediate charitable impact: You can appreciate the impact of your gifts to leukemia research and patient programs during your lifetime.
  • Tax savings: You may reduce or even eliminate gift and estate taxes on assets passed to heirs.
  • Wealth transfer strategy: Assets can appreciate inside the trust, often reducing the tax burden when transferred to beneficiaries.
Charitable Gift Annuities

Charitable Gift Annuities

Fixed income for life and a lasting gift for the breakthroughs and treatments of the future

How It Works

  1. You make a donation (usually cash or appreciated assets) to the Leukemia Research Foundation.
  2. In return, the Leukemia Research Foundation agrees to pay you a fixed amount on your preferred timetable (annually, quarterly, monthly) for the rest of your life.
  3. When you pass away, the remaining balance of the gift stays with the Leukemia Research Foundation to support our mission.

Key Benefits

  • Lifetime income: You (or you and a loved one) receive predictable payments for life.
  • Tax deduction: Part of your gift qualifies as a charitable deduction in the year you make it.
  • Tax-advantaged payments: A portion of your fixed income may be tax-free.
  • Lasting impact: After your lifetime, the remainder of your gift supports our mission.
Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

Flexible support for family or loved ones that includes a meaningful gift for patients, caregivers, and families as well

How It Works

  1. You transfer assets—such as cash, stocks, or real estate—into a trust.
  2. The trust pays income to you and/or other designated beneficiaries throughout the term of the trust (e.g. for up to 20 years, your lifetime)
  3. When the trust term ends, the remainder goes to the Leukemia Research Foundation.

Key Benefits

  • Income for life or term: Receive regular payments based on a percentage of the trust’s value.
  • Tax advantages: You may be eligible for a charitable income tax deduction when the trust is created, and you can minimize immediate capital gains tax if the trust is funded with appreciated assets
  • Sustain future research for patients and families: The remaining value of the trust supports our mission after the trust ends.

Your Legacy Supports Their Future

Our work is far from over – and you make it possible. Consider leaving a legacy of support that will help patients and families like these get one step closer to a cure.

"My brother died from leukemia and throughout the years others (both family and friends) have died from various forms of leukemia. Hopefully, research and treatment will finally wipe out this disease."
