Jim Gibbons Memorial Chapter

Jim Gibbons, a veteran WLS-TV Channel 7 reporter, passed away from complications of leukemia in 1994. “Jim proved you could be both an outstanding reporter and a wonderful gentleman,” Mayor Richard Daley said. Jim was an Emmy Award winner honored in 1979 for his reporting on the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 in Chicago. In 1986, he received the Peter Lisagor Award for television journalism.

In 1995, the ABC7 Jim Gibbons 5K Run, 3K Walk & Survivors Strut was established and is now known as the ABC7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk. In 2011, the Gibbons family formally created the Jim Gibbons Memorial Chapter to create an even stronger bond with the Leukemia Research Foundation.
